The Midterms, Be Prepared

Here come the dreaded midterms. We worry that for all the efforts to date to insure a fair and honest election in the U.S., there is a dark and troubling reality that our president and his machine will not stop short of either cancelling the election altogether or messing with the outcome in a way that will make January 6, 2021 seem like child’s play.

From everything we’ve seen, the Trump movement is determined to perform a coup, a real, right wing anti-democracy intrusion designed to cancel out the votes of the midterms that are right on top of us now. Will the president cancel the election, altogether? Will he declare the result null and void and send in the military to enforce that? What will we do if that happens? Who is ready to stand up to the consequences of that?

It could be that this is the inflection point of our history that we have not had to face since the American Revolution or the Civil War that cost 600,000 American lives.

Or, maybe if this moment of decision is postponed for whatever reason, how many of us will seriously consider how close we are right now, nonetheless? The sleepwalk through history that most of this generation have experienced cannot last forever.

Few were the voices that could be heard after the 2020 election that argued, when push came to shove, that Trump would not relinquish power without a major fight. How are we to suggest it will be different now?

The MAGA ranks may be a shadow of their former selves, but we face a reality that may require the prospect of an open resistance to the ordering of armed troops. What will be the outcome should it come to that?

We have done a lot to counter this prospect in the last two years. But it may not be enough, after all. We pray for peace. But it may not be in the cards depending on a number of factors, or if it is, it would be peace at a frightening price. What say you, America? Are we ready to hand over our democracy to a tyrant? Are we prepared to resist?

What will happen if we face directly conflicting orders? One group says one thing, and another a different thing, each backed by the force of arms? By what criteria will you decide whom to obey? Dear reader, these are not idle thoughts. They may become far more than that. Please take this seriously and think through what your response will be. This is far more than simply deciding whom to vote for.

Looking to ensure provisions exist for some form of a siege is not beyond the pale. You and your family may require the means to persist in a time of shortages. Do what you may need to step up for that. Be prepared.
