Meridian Mustangs Sports: This Week’s Recap, 10/13 – 10/19

Playoffs are nearing for fall sports, and as the postseason draws closer, games become more and more important. Meridian’s teams have put together a strong week, combining for four wins and two losses.

Football won their homecoming bout against rival Brentsville District HS in dramatic fashion. After a rain soaked first half saw them take a dominant 21-6 lead into halftime, both teams held each other to very low offensive outputs after the break. Brentsville broke through early in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs held on to their lead to take a 21-14 victory. This is the first time since 2017 the Mustangs have beaten Brentsville. It improves the Mustangs’ record to 5-3 and breaks their one-win one-loss pattern they have struggled to break out of all season. Their next game is against Warren County, and because of the Mustangs victory, the two teams sport very similar records, meaning this contest could have massive playoff implications.

Field hockey has truly set a new standard for Meridian sports as a whole, continuing to win games against excellent opponents. Their record now stands at a perfect 16-0 after winning their lone game this week against Fauquier HS. The Mustangs are now set up for a very strong postseason run with the #1 seed all but secured.

Girls volleyball split their games this week, sweeping Manassas Park HS 3-0 and losing to Liberty HS 1-3, a surprising loss considering the Mustangs swept Liberty earlier this season. Despite the 1-1 record this week, their season-long record is now 14-5-1, and with just three games to go in the regular season, the Mustangs should have their playoff spot locked up.

Boys volleyball once again split their games this week, sweeping Yorktown HS 3-0, then subsequently got swept by Langley HS 0-3. This puts their record at 7-9 with one game remaining in the regular season, meaning a winning record is no longer possible. It’s been a very odd and inconsistent campaign for the Mustangs. After starting 1-5, they rattled off three straight wins, but then proceeded to fall into an alternating win-loss pattern that has lasted nearly the entire month of October, bringing them to the record they have today.
