The Mustangs offense exploded for five goals to defeat the Kettle Run Cougars in their final regular season game, winning 5-1 and achieving a perfect regular season record of 16-0 for the second time in program history.
This contest was the second in a row for the Mustangs against a very strong opponent, as they had just come off a tight 1-0 win against the Fauquier Falcons. Kettle Run was the final and arguably strongest opponent standing between the Mustangs and a perfect regular season.
The first quarter was deadlocked until the final minute, when sophomore Lenea Paradiso buried a shot with moments left to put the Mustangs up 1-0, off a pass from fellow sophomore Emery Pintauro.
In the second quarter, the Mustangs extended their lead to 2-0 thanks to a goal by senior captain Claire Hartenstein. The Cougars quickly matched that score with one of their own, meaning the Mustangs entered halftime with a 2-1 lead.
In the third quarter, junior captain Zorah Randhawa got one past the Kettle Run goalie to extend the lead to 3-1.
Finally, the fourth quarter saw the sophomore duo of Paradiso and Pintauro each scoring goals, icing the game and the undefeated season with it.
Notably, this game was the team’s “Pink Out,” game, where fans were instructed to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness month. In addition, each player, coach, and team manager chose someone to dedicate the game to, and the individual’s names were read aloud.
The Mustangs’ reward for their perfect record is the #1 seed in the region, meaning they will host their playoff games. Their first contest will be against Middleburg Academy, on Monday, Oct 26.
