Meridian Girls Soccer Invokes Mercy Rule In 8-0 Win Over Skyline

Two nights after their scheduled game against Freedom High School was canceled due to weather, the Meridian girls were eager to get back on the field on a beautiful Wednesday evening with warm temperatures and clear skies. Their visitors from Northwestern District rival Skyline were probably less enthused, given the beatdown the Mustangs had in store for them.

Chloe Zullo scored only three minutes into the game, and the action would center around the Skyline net all night long. Lucy Hladky and Emma Flanagan added tallies midway through the first period, and though the visiting goaltender made some impressive saves to stop the bleeding, Meridian would take a 4-0 lead into the intermission after JV call-up Margot Pennypacker found the back of the net in the final minutes of the frame. After the break, it was Delaney Flanagan and Violet Zullo’s turns to score after each of their sisters did earlier, and then Hladky and Emma Flanagan each tallied their second of the contest. Flanagan’s goal with twelve minutes remaining would end the action prematurely via mercy rule, giving the Mustangs the 8-0 win.

The result improves Meridian to 5-6-1 on the season, and they’ll be back on the field at Liberty (Bealeton) on Friday as they seek to improve back to .500. Their next home game will be next Tuesday against Manassas Park.
