The past weekend was a busy one for Meridian High School athletics as both the boys’ baseball and soccer teams competed in their respective semifinals of the Virginia State Tournament, the former of which was held at Spotsylvania High School while the latter was at nearby Courtland. Baseball fell 5-4 to Abingdon, ending their season one step short of the biggest stage, while soccer defeated Cave Springs 4-1 and advanced to the Finals, where they ultimately lost 1-0 to Yorktown’s Tabb High School.
A rainy Tuesday afternoon — though thankfully no thunderstorms and lightning this time — saw no fewer than four Meridian Mustangs squads in action with their seasons in the balance, with two of those games coming at home.
The Meridian Mustangs boys’ soccer team was competing against the weather as much as it was against visiting Maggie Walker High School on this wet, stormy Thursday afternoon, as multiple delays interrupted their Regional Final matchup.
As the calendar flips from May to June and action resumes after the long holiday weekend, every Meridian High School athletics squad finds themselves either in the midst of postseason play, or already finished with their Spring 2022 campaign.
It’s been a crucial week for Meridian High School athletics as several teams have entered their postseason campaigns, while others conclude their regular season. Both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams began their playoff runs, with the boys taking down Culpeper 16-4 on Thursday at home and then upsetting Brentsville on the road on Monday by a score of 7-5 to advance to the Regional Finals, where they’ll remain on the road to face Fauquier on Thursday.
The weather was cloudy and overcast on Thursday night at Meridian High as both Mustangs soccer teams hosted their regional quarterfinals matchups, and both came away with eventual victories.
