Little Viet Garden Now Open in Eden Center

The former location of Eden Center banh mi favorite Banh Ta Deli has finally reopened in the form of Little Viet Garden. After shutting down earlier this year, the deli’s owners, Michael Phan and Anh Hong, renovated and reimagined their concept into a full-service, sit down restaurant. The new eatery shares the same name of the owner’s previous restaurant they ran in Arlington back in the 1990s.

While Banh Ta’s fan-favorite banh mi sandwiches have not yet returned to the menu at Little Viet Garden, the Washington Post reports they will be bringing them back in the near future. What has already returned, however, are the deli’s pork belly bao buns, which I’m pleased to report are better than ever.

Choolaah Indian BBQ Joins Mosaic District in 2 Weeks

The Mosaic District is adding to its arsenal of restaurants this month when Cleveland-based Choolaah Indian BBQ  joins the lineup in two weeks.

Billing its concept as “fine-casual,” Choolaah will feature four tandoor ovens in the middle of the restaurant, serving as a centerpiece to the dining room. Expect dishes like chicken tikka masala, lamb meatball wraps, salads, naan bread and traditional Indian ice cream called kulfi.

Mosaic’s Choolaah Indian BBQ will be the chain’s first mid-Atlantic location with another coming to Sterling next year.

Choolaah is scheduled to open in Mosaic District on Wednesday, December 28.

After 35 Years, Grevey’s Sports Bar Shutters in Merrifield

Grevey’s, the longtime Yorktowne Shopping Center sports bar, shut down last Sunday after 35 years in business.

The bar and restaurant from former Washington Bullets star Kevin Grevey was a Merrifield mainstay long before the arrival of the Mosaic District and even the since-razed multiplex theater that Mosaic replaced. Grevey’s was plastered with televisions, both inside and out, including booth-side TVs throughout the dining room.

Last Saturday there was a closing party with a live band and, just before last call, bar staff climbed atop the bar and led the room in a chant of “Grevey’s, Grevey’s!”
