New NoVa Community College Mascot Needs a Name

Northern Virginia Community College President Scott Ralls has announced a survey to name NOVA’s new mascot, the NOVA Nighthawk. Voting open now through Friday, Sept. 23 at nvcc.edu/mascot and the winner will be announced shortly after the votes are tallied.

We’re asking everyone in the community to help us select a name for our NOVA Nighthawk,” Ralls said. “Participants can vote for one of the proposed names or write in something different. In addition, people are encouraged to lobby for their favorite name through the hashtag #NameYourNighthawk.” A large number of students, faculty and staff from across the college have participated in the mascot development process.

“Two years ago, everyone was invited to suggest mascots that would reflect college pride and personify school spirit,” said college-wide student activities coordinator Brian Anweiler. “After the NOVA community voted for the top five suggestions, Nighthawks was the clear winner.”

The next step was to design a logo. Students from Northern Virginia Community College’s Communication Design Program submitted several designs and the logo created by student Jennifer Bradley came out on top after another round of voting.

“Now we plan to name our Nighthawk and create a mascot suit so our mascot can appear at athletic games and other events. We’re looking forward to exploring opportunities for our mascot to engage with the greater Northern Virginia community,” Anweiler said. For more information, visit nvcc.edu.
