Fair Winds Wins Gold at Great American Beer Festival
Falls Church’s own Casey Jones and his brewery, Fair Winds Brewing Company, were big winners at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver last month. Jones’s brewery, based out of Lorton, took home the gold medal for its Siren’s Lure beer, a French- and Belgian-style saison.
Jones, a Falls Church resident since 2006, said in a press release “While we are excited to be recognized by the judges and our peers in the industry, we are most excited to have received this honor only six months after opening our doors.”
In addition to being served at its Lorton taproom, Fair Winds beer is available at restaurants and bars throughout Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. including the Falls Church area’s Brine, Blackfinn Ameripub, Clare & Don’s Beach Shack, Dogwood Tavern, Grevey’s, Matchbox, Open Road and Spacebar.

Taco Bamba Expanding to Vienna, Springfield in 2016
Fresh off of winning the Taste of Falls Church, Taco Bamba is about to triple its presence in the area with two new locations set to open up in Vienna and Springfield next year.
Chef Victor Albisu first opened Taco Bamba in 2013 in Pimmit Hills and it has quickly become one of the most popular taquerias in the Washington, D.C. area.
The two new locations will each have their own menu of tacos, sopes and giant-sized tortas but will also serve alcohol, something the original spot doesn’t. The Springfield restaurant will have margaritas on tap, beer and Mexican cocktails like micheladas while the Vienna location plans to have a full bar program and a focus on tequila.
Taco Bamba will open in the Backlick Shopping Center in Springfield in early 2016 and in the former Magruder’s building on Maple Avenue in Vienna next summer.
It’s been a big year for Albisu and his taqueria. In addition to winning the Taste of F.C. last month, Taco Bamba was named one of the best taco spots in America by Business Insider and Albisu took home Chef of the Year honors from Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington this past June.

Chipotle Opening Another Falls Church Location
Another Chipotle is coming to Falls Church as the fast-casual restaurant has signed a lease to open in the Crossroads Place shopping center in Bailey’s Crossroads in August 2016. The new store will occupy 2,100 square feet of space in the shopping center which is anchored by Giant and Burlington Coat Factory.
The new Bailey’s Crossroad’s Chipotle will mark the restaurant’s fourth location in Falls Church, joining existing stores in Broaddale Shopping Center, Seven Corners and Merrifield.
Merrifield Restaurant Boom Continues
Eater DC has word on one newly-open and two restaurants coming soon to Merrifield. Thai by Thai, a local fast casual chain, is now open in the Avenir Place development next to the Dunn Loring metro stop. According to its website, the restaurant offers “authentic, casual and affordable” Thai fare including a “secret” menu featuring Thai street dishes like fried chive cakes, spicy beef soup and a shrimp omelet.
Also opening in the Avenir Place development is Oklahoma Joe’s, a barbecue joint that has been called “The Manliest Restaurant in America” by Men’s Health and is lauded for its ribs, as well as Adams Morgan favorite The Black Squirrel bar.
A spokesperson for Black Squirrel tells Eater they could be open by next spring while a rep for Oklahoma Joe’s tells them they hope to open in the next five months or so.
