Friends of the W&OD Annual Picnic to Honor Walter Mess

The public is invited to attend the annual Friends of the W&OD Trail picnic at American Legion Post 130 this Saturday, June 8, from noon – 4 p.m.

This year’s picnic will serve as a celebration of the life of Walter L. Mess. Mess, who established the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and was a member of its board for more than 45 years, passed away on Sunday, May 26.

During his more than 40 years on the NVRPA Board, the agency preserved over 10,000 acres of land. Through his efforts, he helped to create the trail and is known as the “Father of the W&OD Trail.” The first section of the trail was established in 1974 in his hometown of Falls Church. Over the next 10 years, the trail expanded to its current 45-mile length.

Free “Walter L. Mess, Father of the W&OD” T-shirts will be given to the first 100 picnic visitors to help celebrate Mess’ life.

American Legion Post 130, located at 400 N. Oak St., Falls Church, is adjacent to mile marker 6 ½ on the W&OD Trail.

The menu at the picnic includes hot dogs, crab legs, coconut shrimp and shrimp cocktail, pulled pork barbecue, barbecue chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, cookies, and assorted drinks including sodas, iced tea, lemonade, and bottled water.
