Saturday Memorial for Casey Schulman Announced

Casey Schulman, 22, a J.E.B. Stuart High School graduate in her fourth year at the University of Virginia, died last weekend after a boating accident in the Caribbean. A memorial for Schulman will be held at the Kennedy Center this Saturday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m.

It will be open to the public. Schulman died while had been taking part in Semester at Sea, a study abroad program in which students live and study aboard a boat while traveling across the globe. The Associated Press reported that Schulman and some fellow students were on a snorkeling trip on the Caribbean island of Dominica last Saturday when the incident occurred. Schulman was swimming near their hired boat when the boat drove in reverse and she was struck by its propellers; she was later pronounced dead at an area hospital, according to AP reports. The trip was organized independently of Semester at Sea.

According to The Cavalier Daily, the University of Virginia’s student newspaper, Schulman was a Foreign Affairs major and a member of Alpha Phi sorority who was active in tutoring and intramural sports. At Stuart, she was a cheerleader and swim team member. She graduated with the Class of 2009.
