F.C. Council Gives Initial OK to Parking Restrictions

The Falls Church City Council Monday night voted unanimously to give a “first reading” approval to an amendment to the City code that would allow the City Manager to issue residential parking permits. The immediate objective is to develop parking restrictions on the streets in the Winter Hill Homeowners and Winter Hill Condominium association areas that are currently heavily pressed to provide resident parking and will face added pressures with the opening of the rental units at the 301 W. Broad (Harris Teeter) project in the coming months.

Overall, according to a City memo, with higher density development, the City is increasingly hearing from residents of nearby established neighborhoods. In addition to the two Winter Hill organizations, residents on Park Avenue (Mason Row project), and E. Jefferson St. (Northgate) are other recent examples. Daytime permit-only parking permits are already in effect in residential street zones of the City on W. Greenway, W. George Mason, W. Marshall, S. Lee, S. Oak, E. Jefferson and Birch Streets, and the City has commuter parking restrictions in place on residential streets near the East Falls Church Metro station. The City staff is currently working with the Winter Hill organizations to craft new parking regulations this spring.
