Meridian Boys Soccer Beats Goochland 6-1 In Playoff Opener

One night after both of Meridian High School’s lacrosse teams won their respective regional quarterfinals matchups, there would be more playoff action in Falls Church as the boys’ soccer team took on Goochland. The weather finally decided to cooperate, and it was a beautiful evening with a packed crowd as the Mustangs kicked off what hopes to be a lengthy postseason run.

It wasn’t even five minutes into the game when Quinn Drennan opened the scoring, and later in the period, Henry Brown tallied twice – the second one on an impressive play between him and Fletcher Saaty – to make it 3-0. That would be the score heading into the break, and shortly after play resumed, Saaty took matters into his own hands to extend the lead. Luke Borg then made it 5-0 about ten minutes into the second half, and although Goochland did get one back late, it wouldn’t be anywhere near enough. Suriyan Cushman found the back of the net in the closing minutes to put the cap on this one, and Meridian would handily move on to fight another day with the 6-1 win.

The Mustangs now advance to the regional semifinals, which will be played at home next Tuesday. Their opponent is to be determined.
