Statement from Biden-Harris 2024 Co-Chair Cedric Richmond on Today’s Supreme Court Ruling in Trump v. U.S.

via White House Press Release

“Today, Donald Trump’s justices empowered the Supreme Court to abandon the founding ideals of our nation and dissolve our democracy as we know it. If Trump’s appointees and this court reject the founders and decide that the Constitution does not apply equally to everyone, our laws won’t be worth the paper they’re written on.   “Trump’s court has left our country vulnerable to an attack from within. It has removed the guardrails that protect us from a president trying to be a dictator, leaving us at the whims of the person in one position. Now more than ever, we must unite and stop Donald Trump from ever holding that position again.   “But there is hope. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson understands that this ruling is a ‘five-alarm fire,’ and we stand ready to ensure that the potential for ‘nightmare scenarios’ Justice Sonya Sotomayor predicts will never come to pass. Democrats must unite and work to put this fire out once and for all. We will live up to our name and protect the system of government that makes our country great. And we will protect Americans from a failed, desperate former president, out for revenge, who thinks he can get away with murder – on Fifth Avenue or at the U.S. Capitol.
