Meridian Soccer Whomps Skyline Twice in Senior Night Doubleheader

Both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams were in action for Senior Night on a misty
Tuesday evening at Meridian High, playing host to the visiting Skyline Hawks. Suffice to say,
they ensured that the many Mustang parents and fans who came out to support them would be
going home happy.

The boys were up first, with their game slightly delayed from its scheduled 5:30 start
time as Skyline was late to arrive. The visitors may as well have not shown up at all, because it
was evident from early on that the match would be a blowout, just as it was when Meridian faced
them on the road last Monday and won 15-0. Oliver Frandano got things going with a goal just
more than ten minutes in, and then three goals in a span of two minutes from Charlie Russell,
Misha Kasher, and Alex Gardner respectively, broke things open midway through the period.
The Mustangs went into the half up 9-0, and then a barrage of goals early in the second put
things away as they cruised to a 17-0 victory, ending the game 20 minutes sooner than the full
distance due to the Mercy Rule. Gardner led the way with five goals while Felix Green had three,
and Frandano, Russell, and Tucker Albaugh each added a pair of tallies.

Both teams’ seniors were honored between games, and then the girls took the field, with
Elizabeth Creed – who has missed the entire season with a broken wrist – getting an honorary
start as she played the first few seconds before coming out of the game. It took almost no time
(31 seconds, to be exact) for the girls to open the scoring as Madie Miller found the back of the
net, and Miller by herself scored two more times in the opening ten minutes. Emma Flanagan,
Rachel Stamilio, and Maureen Tremblay then all added to the tally before halftime, and three
more goals afterwards from Jane Fiegel, Lucy Hladky, and Miller again were able to end the
game via Mercy Rule as the Mustangs won 9-0.

It’s the final regular season action for both the boys and girls, as both teams will now be
off until Thursday the 25 th . Both have secured at least one home regional playoff game, though
their opponents are to be determined.
