Falls Church’s Smashburger Is Out of Business

Smashburger, the Denver-based burger joint in the “Tulip” building at the corner of S. Washington St. and Annandale Road in Falls Church, has closed. The store, which first opened in January of 2014, closed at the end of the year.

The Denver-based chain was once the fastest growing, fast casual “better burger” restaurant in the United States but has had trouble expanding in the Washington, D.C. area. The area’s first District location in Dupont Circle closed after a barely a year and, in addition to the latest F.C. departure, the chain’s Bethesda store shuttered this month as well.

A sign on the door of the out-of-business Falls Church Smashburger encourages people to visit the restaurant’s other D.C.-area locations including stores in Alexandria, Fairfax, Tysons and more.

Falls Church Distillers Could Be Open Next Month

Plans for the upcoming distillery, Falls Church Distillers, have been submitted to the City of Falls Church and the operation could be open next month.

Owner Michael Paluzzi told the News-Press he’s hoping for a two-stage opening, with a beer and wine side debuting in February and then for the spirit side of the operation to open by the end of March.

The distillery is currently holding a contest seeking slogans for a limited run of t-shirts. More information can be found at faceboook.com/FallsChurchDistillers.

Astro Doughnuts Debuts New Flavors in January

With the new year comes a slate of new doughnut flavors at Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken. For the month of January, Astro is serving the Mango Mojito, made with a mango rum and lime glaze, mint drizzle and crystallized mint, the German Chocolate Cake, Pineapple Upside Down and an apple-compte filled Apple Walnut Cheesecake doughnut.

And for the D.C. crowd only (sorry, Falls Church), the shop is selling a special “Farewell Obama” creation with salted caramel popcorn, peanuts and chocolate drizzle. The tribute to the 44th president is available Jan. 16 – 22, only at Astro’s District location.
