BalletNova Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Flamenco

BalletNova Center for Dance, located at 3443 Carlin Springs Road, Falls Church, is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a two-day festival focusing on flamenco dance on Saturday, Sept. 17 and Sunday, Sept. 18. There are two workshops, one for kids and one for adults, and a performance by Furia Flamenca Dance Company in the Fredgren Studio Theatre, all of which will be accompanied by live music.

The celebration will kick off with a lecture and demonstration for children ages 12 and under at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. Admission to the lecture and demonstration is $10. At the event, children will hear about the history of flamenco, learn a few steps and watch a short performance.

That night the Furia Flamenca Dance Company will give a performance at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $15. Under the direction of Estela Velez de Paredez, this award-winning company brings the ferocity and passion of flamenco to the stage and transports audiences to Southern Spain in technically refined, emotionally explosive, and dynamically choreographed dancing.

The next day there will be an adult intro to flamenco workshop at 10 a.m. for people age 15 and over. Admission to the workshop is $25. Participants learn the basics of flamenco’s fluid arms and percussive feet. For more information or to buy tickets for any of the events, visit BalletNova.org.
