Fairfax Co. School Board to Vote on Stuart Renaming Working Group at July 28 Meeting

The Fairfax County School Board announced at its regular meeting on Thursday, July 14 that it will vote on a motion to create a J.E.B. Stuart High School Renaming Working Group at its next regular meeting on Thursday, July 28. Several people expressed their thoughts on whether or not the Lake Barcroft-based high school should be renamed.

Those who spoke on whether or not the school should be renamed included Tom Davis, a former Republican congressman from Virginia, who spoke out against renaming the school. Nine people spoke about the subject during the citizen participation period of the meeting, six who were against the renaming and three who spoke in favor of renaming the school.

Also, Sandy Evans, the board member who represents Mason district, where J.E.B. Stuart High School is located, was elected chairman of the board for the next year in an unanimous vote. Janie Strauss was elected vice chairman of the school board, but her election was more contentious than Evans’. One member of the board abstained and three members were opposed to her election. Eight members of the board carried the majority that elected Strauss to the vice chair position.
