F.C. School Board Takes No Action on Special Ed Report

At its work session Tuesday night, the Falls Church School Board decided to take no action in response to a report by two of its members who put in more than 80 hours to investigate the petition last fall from volunteer members of the Schools’ Special Education Advisory Committee asking for the removal of the committee’s chair and vice chair. The petition claimed that members were “intimidated” and “handled in a dismissive way” by the committee leadership. Board members Erin Gill and Michael Ankuma said they found “no ulterior motives,” but “different views of governance.”

A motion by School Board member John Lawrence to remove the committee chair Becky Smeardon failed for lack of a second. The committee will be subject to new appointments and internal election of its leadership with the start of the new fiscal year.
