Two seniors from George Mason High School’s varsity boys basketball team were named to the Virginia High School League 2A Boys All-State Basketball Team, according to a release from the Virginia High School League sent out today.

Mason’s senior forward Robert Tartt, who broke Mason’s career scoring record for boys basketball this season, was named to the All-State first team. Mason senior guard Elliot Mercado, a four-year varsity player and standout striker on Mason’s state championship varsity boys soccer team, was named to the All-State second team.

After going 29 straight games without a loss during the 2015-2016 basketball season, including winning the Joe Cascio Holiday Classic for the first time against teams that compete in higher divisions than the Mustangs, Mason lost by three points in the Virginia High School League 2A state semifinal to Greensville County High School.

Tartt and Mercado, along with seniors Josh Allen and Douglas Bossart, were the core of a Mason basketball team that reached the Virginia High School League 2A state tournament for the first time since 2012, when the Mustangs lost in the state championship. The Mustangs impressive run this season included winning the Bull Run District regular season championship, the Conference 35 postseason tournament and the Region 2A postseason tournament.
