Local Market Keeps F.C. Stocked During Blizzard
Two feet of snow doesn’t really bode well for commerce but the blizzard of 2016 was good for at least one business here in The Little City. While most stores and restaurants closed up shop during the weekend storm, Falls Church’s The Local Market stayed open through it all – and thrived.
“We decided before the storm that we were going to be here for our customers as long as possible,” said owner Patrick Fleming. And they stuck to that plan.
Open at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday, Fleming and co-owner Tamara Powell kept Local Market customers well-stocked throughout “Snowzilla” by making food runs all weekend long. With their regular bread supplier, Firehook, all the way out in Chantilly, they were able to stay stocked with runs to Alexandria’s Great Harvest on Saturday and with help from Falls Church’s-own Kendall’s Cakes on Sunday. Fleming even offered free delivery to any customer during the storm.
The days leading up the blizzard were busy for The Local Market, too. So much so, that Monday through Sunday was Fleming and Powell’s biggest sales week since they bought the store last July.
“Having big sales numbers is important to us, of course,” said Fleming. “But in terms of pure fun, it’s really great to be here for people and serve them in this way.”

Peking Gourmet Named Top 10 Chinese Restaurant in U.S.
Falls Church’s own Peking Gourmet Inn has been named one of the top 10 Chinese food restaurants in the country, according to a new list from Time Out North America.
Peking Gourmet was number 10 on the list of 17 top U.S. Chinese dining destinations, bested only by restaurants in much larger cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. Time Out cites the Falls Church restaurant’s Peking duck, obviously, and the “feast of dark, rich meat and crackling, glistening golden skin accompanied by unusually delicate pancakes, housemade hoisin sauce, and green onions grown on the family farm.”
Peking Gourmet’s lamb dishes and jeo-yen shrimp are also recommended in the write-up.
