Fair Winds, Mad Fox Help Fellow Brewer’s Fight Vs. Cancer
Falls Church’s Casey Jones and his Lorton brewery, Fair Winds Brewing Company, have teamed up with 19 other local craft brewers to create a new beer to help a fellow brewer’s fight against cancer.
Last Thursday, the brewers got together at Fair Winds to create Kerri’s Cure, a Belgian pale ale, a collaboration brew named for Forge Brewing Works brewer-and-owner Matt Rose’s wife Kerri who is currently fighting stomach cancer. Kerri was diagnosed with stage IV adenocarcinoma last August while pregnant with the couple’s first child, Lance, who was born in September.
The collaborating breweries will debut the special beer on Friday, January 29, at each of their respective locations throughout the region. City of Falls Church’s Mad Fox Brewing Company is one of the collaborators and will be tapping Kerri’s Cure this month along with Adroit Theory, Adventure Brewing, Bad Wolf, Caboose, Capitol City, Corcoran, Fair Winds, Forge Brew Works, Heritage, Lost Rhino, Ocelot, Old Bust Head, Old Ox, Ornery Beer Co., Port City, Pro Re Nata Brewery, Spencer Devon and Tin Cannon.
All proceeds from the sale of Kerri’s Cure will go to Rose’s family to help aid in her treatment and recovery. In addition to sales of the beer, a GoFundMe page is accepting donations for the Roses at gofundme.com/daywalker.
Astro to Debut Cake Doughnuts at Falls Church Location
So much for those resolutions. Falls Church’s Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken will debut made-to-order cake doughnuts starting Thursday at its Falls Church location. The new doughnuts, made from scratch and served hot out of the fryer, will be available in four different flavors: cinnamon sugar, vanilla, maple bacon and Nutella with chocolate shavings. Cake doughnut prices will range from $2–2.65 each.
In celebration of its new treats, Astro will be giving away free cake doughnuts to the first 100 customers at its Falls Church location Thursday. The doughnuts will be coming to Astro’s D.C. G Street location in the coming weeks.

Chef Weiss Leaving Mad Fox For D.C.’s Rebellion
Mad Fox Brewing Company executive chef and “epic burger” guru Travis Weiss is leaving the Falls Church brew pub for a new position in Washington, D.C.
Weiss, who took over the kitchen at Mad Fox in September of 2014, will be the new executive chef of Rebellion in Dupont Circle and director of culinary development for the restaurant’s parent group, Proof Hospitality.
During his tenure at Mad Fox, Weiss cultivated the restaurant’s “Epic Burger Wednesday” promotion, creating more than 75 unique creations over that time, never repeating a burger. For his last epic burger, he brought back a crowd favorite, the Reuburgerchanga, a mashup of a burger, Reuben and chimichanga. In honor of his last burger at Mad Fox, the Reuburgerchanga will be served through the end of the day Thursday, Jan. 14, Weiss’s last day in the kitchen.
And while Weiss’s epic burgers at Mad Fox will be no more, owner Bill Madden has assured the News-Press the weekly promotion will continue at the Falls Church brew pub. No replacement for Weiss has been announced at this time.
