The Falls Church City Girls Book Club, which is made up of students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, recently read Crenshaw, a book about a boy who is homeless and his imaginary gigantic cat, by Katherine Applegate. Inspired by the book, girls in the club organized a food drive.

Elise Morris, Fiona Scheer and Julia Mineo made and delivered signs advertising the food drive to 125 houses in the Virginia Forest neighborhood in Falls Church. They collected and then delivered 276 pounds of food to the Arlington Food Assistance Center on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

While at the food bank, the girls bagged 300 “backpacks” of food for kids to take home from school for the weekend in the instance that they have little to no food to eat at home.
