by Liz Lizama

George Mason High School’s varsity girls soccer team notched its eighth consecutive state title in a tough 3-1 game against Maggie Walker High School yesterdat morning. The Mustangs beat the Green Dragons 4-0 in last week’s 2A East regional tournament, but Maggie Walker put up a bigger fight to keep the goal differential much closer in the state final at Radford University.

Maggie Walker took the lead early with a goal 10 minutes into the first half, bringing the game to 1-0. Despite’s Mason’s efforts, the Mustangs still trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, sophomore forward/midfielder Becca Crouch scored the needed goal to tie the game 1-1. Senior forward/midfielder Ava Roth followed with a second goal to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead. Mason’s offense continued to push in hopes of widening the gap. And with only two minutes remaining in the game, Crouch scored again to seal the Mason victory.

The state championship win closes out the Mustang season with an overall 27-0 undefeated record.
