Longtime F.C. Resident Mona Maloney Dies at Age 93

421obitLongtime Falls Church resident Mona Maloney passed away on July 8, 2014, at the age of 93.

Mona was born in Atchison County, Missouri, on Feb. 21, 1921, to Minnie and Tom Fleming. She grew up in Mound City, Missouri, where she initially lived on a farm owned by William and Ellen Tyson. Mona and her younger brother, Jimmy, rode their pony, Tommy, to Mineral Springs, a one-room country school.

Mona later attended Blair School and Mound City High School, where she graduated in 1939. She last attended her 70th high school reunion in 2009.

Mona came to Arlington during World War II to work for the Navy Department. Mona shared 62 years with Joseph Maloney, whom she married in 1943. She had lived in Falls Church since 1947.

The Maloney family was actively involved in its neighborhood church, St. James, and community especially the local Boy and Girl Scout chapters where Mona served as a volunteer leader. She enjoyed being a homemaker, especially raising vegetables and drying laundry outside.

Mona was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, and two brothers.

Mona is survived by her son, J.T., of Falls Church; her daughter, Nancy (Bruce), of Anmore, British Columbia, Canada; relatives; and friends.

Mona was a caring person whose helpful nature made the world a better place.

Services were held at Oakwood Cemetery on July 10, 2014. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice or to the Mound City Nutrition Site, 613 State St., Mound City, MO, 64470, 660-442-3324.
