Police Arrest Intoxicated Man on S. Washington Street

The City of Falls Church police arrested a man Thursday evening after he was involved in an encounter with a woman and her child, officials reported today.

Police say the woman was walking with her son through the 200 block of South Washington Street when the suspect, identified by police as Douglas Burkel, age 46 with no fixed address, moved towards the child as the child neared Burkel and his possessions. A bystander at the scene intervened and prevented Burkel from getting closer to the child. When police arrived on the scene, they reported a strong smell of alcohol and other displays of intoxication from Burkel. He denied attempting to grab the child but did state the he did not want kids near his possessions, police say.

Burkel was arrested and charged with attempted abduction and drunk in public. He is currently being held without bond.
