Library Fine Forgiveness to Support Local Food Banks

Due to Hurricane Sandy and the resulting closure of the library for two days during the earlier campaign, the Mary Riley Styles Public Library is continuing its annual “Food for Fines” initiative.

This service provides patrons the opportunity to help those in need by donating non-perishable groceries as payment for fines on overdue items.

This second week of “Food for Fines” will run next week, from Monday, Dec. 10, through Sunday, Dec. 16, and is an optional program.

A single grocery item will cover the fine for a single overdue item, including books, DVDs, audiobooks, and music CDs. There is no limit on the number or amount of fines that can be cleared or the quantity of overdue material that can be returned. Bills for lost or damaged library materials, however, cannot be paid through this program.

For safety reasons, glass jars, opened or bulging cans, items past their expiration date, and sample- or trial-sized items cannot be accepted for donation.

Mary Riley Styles Public Library is located at 120 N. Virginia Ave., Falls Church. For more information, call 703-248-5031.
