The two-year old George Mason High School varsity field hockey team, with a record of 4-3-1, has stepped it up in the past few weeks, winning their last three games in a row.
The girls played Brookewood High School last Wednesday and won 1-0. The Mustangs played a solid game, with multiple shots on goal and quick clears defensively. The winning shot, scored by Caroline Stricker, was only the first of many goals to follow by the freshman.
At their home game last Friday, the girls took on Briar Woods High School. It was a close game, tied at one point apiece at the end of the second half. The game went into a 12-minute overtime, with only seven players from each team on the field playing to the first goal scored.
The Mustangs’ perseverance was key to their success; the winning goal was scored by Stricker, her second of the game, to bring the Mustangs a 2-1 senior night victory.
“Out of all nights to win, I think this night meant much more to me because it was senior night and everyone, especially the seniors, wanted it so badly,” senior Isabella Dod said. “Our hard work really showed.”
The team hosted Woodrow Wilson High School Tuesday night, but results were not available at press time. The Mason team will travel to Foxcroft School to compete Thursday.

JV
The George Mason High School JV field hockey team battled Briar Woods High School last Friday. The girls dominated most of the first half and had several shots on goal. Briar Woods took a few shots as well, but Mason’s keeper, eighth-grader Hannah Hiscott, was quick to react and had many saves.
“Some of you are playing the best I’ve ever seen you play,” Mason Coach Elizabeth Garner told the girls at halftime.
At the end of the second half, the still scoreless game went into a 12-minute, seven-on-seven overtime.
Both teams fought hard, but a great play by Briar Woods defeated Mason, 1-0.
“It was your first overtime and I think you handled it very well,” Garner told the girls.
The JV team will travel to The Madeira School Saturday to take on multiple teams at a JV tournament.
