Candidate Statement: Paul Handly

handlyMy name is Paul Handly and I am asking for your vote for Falls Church City Council on May 1st. I bring a fresh perspective to the many challenges we face and my combination of government, environmental and entrepreneurial experience equip me well to be a positive force on our City Council.

I earned a BA from Hamilton College, N.Y. and a Masters in Management from the University of Virginia. I am currently the Chief Technology Officer of a Falls Church company, Three Wire Systems, focused on providing proactive preventative care to military veterans. Prior to joining Three Wire Systems, I held senior management positions in two successful technology companies and served as a civil servant for 10 years in the U.S. National Park Service where I cut my teeth as GIS specialist working on large scale planning projects at the National Capital Region Planning office.

I have lived and worked in Northern Virginia most of my life. My wife and I moved into the City in 2004 because of the schools and immediately fell in love with the community. This is a terrific city where many families want to live and businesses want to thrive. But I know we can do better and I’m prepared to work hard to build on the successes of the past to leverage the opportunities before us today. To succeed, we must focus our vision on excellent, engaging schools, better support of existing city businesses, increased support of the arts, and improved transportation focused on people not cars.

Specifically I support:

•School board proposal to build a new high school

•Improved municipal parking and Metro/commercial corridor trolley

•Smart growth with a pedestrian focus

•Environmental excellence for the City including LEED Silver standards for new construction

•Improved storm water management throughout the City

•New tax incentives and streamlined permitting to spur growth

•Increased marketing of our strengths as a unique, vibrant destination inside the beltway.

As a longtime local entrepreneur I have successfully founded and grown companies in our area and I understand intimately the challenges that face the businesses we are trying to attract and keep in our city. Those who know me best know that I am hard working, ethical, and deeply committed to community service. I have the experience and drive to serve our community. I ask that you vote Paul Handly for City Council on May 1st.
