Mason Bands Get Superior Rank at District Assessment

George Mason High School bands, comprising 160 students, performed at District X Band Assessment at Annandale High School Friday, receiving the highest ratings and rankings possible – straight Superior ratings from the four adjudicators from across the country.

The 85-member wind symphony performed the highest level of difficulty music, Level VI. The program included “The Chimes of Liberty” by Edwin Franko Goldman, “Always With Grace” by Gary P. Gilroy and “Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna” by Franz von Suppé.

The 75-member symphonic band performed Level IV music in a program which included “Rough Riders” by Karl L. King, “Serengeti” by John Higgins and “Sovereign Variants” by James Curnow. Both groups also had to sightread music not previously played for adjudication.

This continues the GMHS band tradition of straight superior ratings for 11 years in a row and qualifies the groups for the Virginia Music Educations Blue Ribbon Award for Musical Excellence.
