Lady ‘Stang Hoops Losses Put Team in 6th at Classic

The George Mason High School girls varsity basketball team placed sixth in the Pohanka Chantilly Classic over the holidays.

The Lady Mustangs opened the tournament on Dec. 27 with a 60-38 loss to Chantilly High School. Then they beat Thomas Jefferson High School 70-52 on Dec. 28 in the loser bracket, but rounded out the tournament with a dismal 78-31 loss to Robinson High School last Thursday.

Georgetown Visitation Prepatory School beat Chantilly 44-43 to win the Pohanka Chantilly Classic.

Robinson only led by five at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Rams started to dominate the Lady Mustangs with a 19-9 second quarter. The Rams ran away with it in the third quarter when they outscored Mason 31-7.

Junior forward Stephanie Cheney led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 10 points, and sophomore guard Julianna Rollo added six points against Robinson. Rollo’s points came from two three-pointers. Sophomore center Ashley Alexander tacked on four points.

The Lady Mustangs played Strasburg High School at home last Wednesday, but results were not available at press time. The team will face Rappahannock County High School Friday.
