Daniel J. “Danny” Schlitt, Deputy Director of the Falls Church Recreation and Parks Department, has been appointed Recreation and Parks Director effective April 2, 2011. Schlitt, a 20-year Recreation and Parks employee, will assume the top leadership position following the April 1 retirement of Howard Herman.
“Danny’s knowledge and skill in recreation management and leadership and his positive experience working with individuals, City organizations, City schools and regional partners will be a valuable asset to the Department and to the City in the years ahead,” said City Manager Wyatt Shields. “As all who have worked with Danny know, he cares deeply about the people who participate in City recreational activities, and is driven to provide them with the highest quality experience possible.”
Schlitt has been Deputy Director of Recreation and Parks since June 2007; was Senior Program Supervisor, Parks and Facilities Operations, 2001-2007; Program Supervisor 1991-2002; and Recreation Leader in 1990. From 1987 to 1990, Schlitt was Teen Recreation Supervisor in Vero Beach, FL. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Administration, earned two certifications in Sport Management Administration and Programming, and received a Public Manager Certification from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Executive Development Program. In 1998, Schlitt was named the City of Falls Church “Employee of the Year”. Schlitt, his wife and their two children, are City residents.
As Director, Schlitt will be responsible for the $2.6 million Recreation and Park annual budget with revenues of $1.6 million, supervising a Department staff of 20 full-time and part-time employees, managing the day-to-day operations of the Recreation and Parks Department including administration of the Community Center, 13 neighborhood parks and other City-owned buildings; overseeing administration of recreation programs including hobby classes, special events, sports and athletic programs, senior activities and camps.
As part of the City’s budget belt tightening and the City Manager’s management restructuring, the Deputy Director position, vacated with Schlitt’s promotion to Director, will not be filled, Shields said. Retiring Director of Recreation and Parks Howard Herman was also General Manager of the Community Services Department and oversaw the City library and Court Services. Schlitt will hold the title of Director of Recreation and Parks and the General Manager position will cease to exist. The Recreation and Parks, Library, and Court Services directors will report to the City Manager.
