Businesses and Volunteers Help Vets Prepare for Holidays

Saturday marked the third and final day of the first annual Decorate A Vet program, an event organized by Sislers Stone and other local businesses to help local veterans in need.

Saturday marked the third and final day of the first annual Decorate A Vet program, an event organized by Sislers Stone and other local businesses to help local veterans in need. The idea – to clean and decorate the houses of local service men and women – was formed by Jeff Jones of Classic Stonescaping this past Veterans Day. In a matter of just a few weeks, it came to fruition, culminating with over 60 volunteers descending on the homes of six local veterans to do basic yard cleanup. Additionally, three houses were decorated for the holidays, Veterans Commons and the local Legion post were landscaped, and five trees were planted in remembrance of the sacrifices made by veterans.

Clare and Don’s Beach Shack delivered dinner to each of the decorated families, and American Legion Post 130 conducted a ceremony to celebrate the event and honor the Rodriguez family who lost a son, fiancé and father in Afghanistan this April.

Donations for next year’s Decorate A Vet will be accepted in the form of unused decorations at Sislers Stone (7139 Lee Hwy). Donations should be made out to American Legion Post 130 c/o Harry Shovelin.
