Students from George C. Marshall High School who are attending the Fairfax County Public Schools Marketing on the Mall program at Tysons Corner Center are learning economics and history through the study of the hemline index. Students are challenged to compare the economic impact of American history on fashion, then chart hemlines through the decades. The lesson enables the students to determine if the economic forecasting found in the fashion industry is accurate, and also helps them see how involvement in war influences fashion.
