George Mason High School announced their All-Decade Teams for boys and girls basketball teams last month. Mason coaches made the selections based on performance and accomplishments during the 2000-2009 school years.
The selections are as follows:
Girls All-Decade Team (2000-2009)
Beth Pyne (2002) (guard) – Two-time All-District first team; Bull Run District Player of the Year and second team All-State in 2001.
Adrienne Thompson (2002) (center) – Two time All-District second team; shot-blocking and rebounding center.
Christina Sedney (2003) (forward) – Under-sized forward adept at both scoring and rebounding; All-District second team in 2001.
Becky Roa (2004) (guard) – First team All-District in 2003-04; defensive ball-hawk who specialized in intercepting passes and stealing the ball.
Maggie O’Toole (2006) (guard) – Three-time first team All-District; Bull Run District Player of the Year in 2004-05; second leading girls’ basketball scorer in George Mason history despite missing the equivalent of a season to injuries.
Alex Pender (2006) (center) – Dominating post player selected first team All-District one year and second team All-District another.
Meredith Hamme (2008) (guard) – Second team All-District as a freshman; first team All-District and second team All-Region as a sophomore; lost her junior year and a third of her senior year to injuries but returned to help lead the team to a regional title.
Bailey Walton (2008) (forward) – First team All-District in 2006-07; could shoot from the outside or take the ball to the hoop.
Kim Kenny (2009) (center) – Second team All-District as a junior; first team All-District and second team All-Region as a senior. Terrific defensive post player who helped team to 2009 state championship.
Nicole Mitchell (2010) (forward) – First team All-District as a sophomore; Bull Run District Player of the Year in 2008-09 as a junior; fourth leading scorer in Mason girls’ basketball history (outside the decade: first team All-State in 2009-10; won three regional and two state titles).
Chantal Thomas (2010) (guard) – Second team All-District as a junior in 2008-09; starting point guard and defensive whiz on 2008-09 state championship team (outside the decade: State Player of the Year in 2009-10; won three regional and two state titles).
Boys All-Decade Team (2000-2009)
Nate Hamme (2001) (guard/swingman) – Co-MVP, sparkplug, assists leader, and defensive stalwart on the 2000-01 district and regional championship team that went to the state Final Four.
Ben Griffin (2002) (forward) – Three sport Hall of Famer whose athleticism and elusiveness created match-up problems for opposing teams. Played soccer at Southern Virginia University and Mars Hill College
Kenny Wilson (2002) (guard) – All-time leading scorer in George Mason boys’ basketball history; first team All-State in 2000-01; played at the University of the District of Columbia (Division II).
Evan Hamme (2004) (center) – First team All-District in 2003-04; averaged a scoring (20.8) and rebounding (12.2) double double his senior year. Played at Franklin and Marshall College (Division III).
Matt Williams (2004) (forward) – Terrific three sport athlete who excelled in the paint and on the boards; second team All-District in 2002-03; missed his senior year due to back problems.
Travis Greene (2006) (forward) – Exceptional athlete and two-time second team All-District player noted for speed, quickness, and leaping ability. Plays intercollegiate football at Elon University (Division I-AA).
Paul Mene (2006) (guard) – First team All-District in 2005-06 on regional semi-final squad; defensive ball hawk; excellent offensive penetration to the basket; played baseball at Union College (Division III).
Jack Settje (2007) (forward/swingman) – Two-time first team All-District player; noted for long range sharpshooting and pinpoint passing. Played at Division III St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Joel Chandler (2009) (forward/swingman) – Named first team All-District twice; combined outside shooting skills with quickness, athleticism, and ability to drive the lane.
Jordan Cheney (2010) (center) – Shot blocking big man; second team All-District in 2007-08; will play at Division III Swarthmore College (outside the decade: named second team All-District in 2009-10).
