The driver of an SUV and a bicyclist were killed when the SUV veered across the median and entered a bicycle path on Lee Highway near the intersection of Forum Drive today.

Fairfax County Police are investigating the double fatality that occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday, May 21. A 2001 Dodge Durango SUV driven by a 31-year-old Manassas man was northbound on Lee Highway just prior to the intersection of Forum Drive. The SUV crossed the center median and traveled diagonally to the left. It crossed all lanes of Forum Drive and entered a bicycle path parallel to Lee Highway. An 18-year-old Fairfax man on a bicycle was about to enter the bike path when he was struck from behind by the SUV. The vehicle then struck a tree adjacent to the path and came to rest. The bicyclist and the driver of the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene.

Crash Reconstruction detectives are still on the scene. They will attempt to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether or not speed and alcohol were contributing factors.

Police are asking anyone who might have witnessed the crash to call the Fairfax County Police Department at (703) 691-2131.
