After leading this year’s George Mason girls varsity soccer team to the cusp of its third district title in a row, the Mustangs’ senior class – which has also won back-to-back state titles, and is in the hunt for a third – certainly has plenty to celebrate this spring. The team honored its seniors on Friday, May 14 and proceeded to roll to a 10-0 league victory over Rappahannock County.

The squad will host a semi-final playoff game on Tuesday, May 25.

Mustang seniors Karen Hamill, Kelley Frank, Shelley Gresko and Nicole Peyton “have all been on the varsity team since they were freshmen,” coach Jennifer Parsons told the News-Press. “Karen has been a consistent starter for all four years and was named Second Team All-District last season. Nicole Mitchell was named to the All-State team last season, after her first season ever playing soccer. She had 14 shutouts and only 12 goals against during the entire 2009 season. This season, she currently has seven shutouts and only six goals against in our nine district games.”

Mitchell plans to play basketball at Christopher Newport University next year.

“Shelley, Nicole Peyton and Kelley Frank are all starters and anchor my defensive line, which has been a huge part of our record and the seven shutouts and only six goals against,” Parsons added. “These girls set a high standard in the back of the field and have come together to form a solid defensive line for us this season.”
