FCPS Schedules Make-Up Day on Feb. 15

Fairfax County Public Schools announced that Monday, Feb. 15, will be a make-up day for all students in the district. The day had originally been played as a holiday for President’s Day. All offices will be open. Elementary schools will follow a full-day schedule with no early dismissal. School Age Child Care programs will operate on a regular schedule.

Marshall Students Make All-District Band

George C. Marshall High students recently made All-District Band. They are Emma Balek, Lizzie Culbertson, Nick Kemp, Yura Kim, Vincent McLeese, Nick Peck, Jessica Rennert, Jordan Rennert, Nick Ritter and Malavika Sahai.

Stuart Offers Seminar for Safe Teen Driving

Parents are invited to attend the Partners for Safe Teen Driving Program at J.E.B. Stuart High School (3301 Peace Valley Lane, Falls Church) today, Feb. 11, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in Stuart High’s Driver Education room, Room c-45. The program is designed to help parents prepare for the challenges they face with their teenager’s new driving responsibilities. Driver Education teachers, a police officer and an auto insurance company representative will be present to share information and to answer your questions.

McLean Chamber Soloists Return from Germany

The McLean Chamber Soloists, under the direction of  Kathleen O’Hara, from McLean High School represented the school recently, returning Monday from a 10-day-long musical journey to Germany. The musicians teamed up with the Detmold Jugendorchester for combined rehearsals and concerts for the town of Detmold in western Germany. Pimmit Hills’ Bud Mayo Enters Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Bud Mayo, assistant principal at Pimmit Hills Alternative High School, was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Potomac Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse on Saturday, Feb. 6. Mayo was instrumental in the introduction of lacrosse in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) while serving as a history teacher at Lake Braddock Secondary School. With the support of then-principal John Alwood, lacrosse was introduced as a club sport; Mayo served as the sponsor and coach of this team – the first lacrosse team in FCPS. Fifteen years later, lacrosse has become a varsity sport in the district.

Fairfax County School Board Postpones Budget Forum

The Budget Forum, hosted by the Fairfax County School Board, has been rescheduled due to snow and will now be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Marshall High School (7731 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church) from 9 a.m. – noon.

Participants will learn more about the advertised budget adopted by the School Board on Feb. 4 and the budget process. In addition, two breakout sessions will feature principals who will share the budget impact on their schools. A question and answer session will also be held. Stuart PTA Holds Raffle for All Night Grad Party

The J.E.B. Stuart High All Night Party Committee is raffling off a handmade quilt, in May, donated and made by Donna Vasilakos, parent of a current senior. All proceeds will go to support the 2010 J.E.B. Stuart All Night Graduation Party. Raffle tickets cost $5. FCPS Academies Announce Information Nights

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) high school career academies will host evening academy information nights and open houses for prospective high school students who are interested for 2010-11. The open houses are designed for students entering grades 10 – 12.

At Falls Church High (7521 Jaguar Trail, Falls Church), the academy focuses on Health and Human Services, and welcomes individual visits. At Marshall High, the International Studies and Business, and the Engineering and Scientific Technology, Academy programs are holding an information night on Monday, Feb. 22, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at the school (7731 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church). Marshall High Invite All to International Family Night

Marshall High School (7731 Leesburg Pike) will be hosting an international family night on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 6 – 9 p.m., featuring food and live entertainment. Attendees are encouraged to share an ethnic dish that can serve 12 – 15 people. After the food, there will be cultural show for entertainment. Highlanders One Act Plays Postponed Till March

McLean High School Theater Department’s student-directed One Act Play festival has been rescheduled for March 17 – 18. Many of the works, which are directed by students, are works written by the students, and are suitable for 7th graders and older.
