F.C. City Schools Closed Through the Week

School Cancelled Tuesday & Wednesday; To Reopen After Winter Break

Falls Church City Public Schools will be closed through the rest of the week City officials announced today, cancelling classes on Tuesday and Wednesday. Schools will reopen Monday, January 4, 2010 after winter break.

In addition, all school sponsored activities and events are also cancelled Tuesday and Wednesday. Day care and ASAP programs will be consolidated and will operate out of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School beginning at 9 a.m. each day.

City facilities, including City Hall, the Community Center and Mary Riley Style Library will open on time on Tuesday. Employees will have the option of unscheduled leave.

The City has also said there will be no GEORGE bus service Monday as well.

The City’s snow emergency declared Friday is still in effect, so parking is prohibited on snow emergency routes. Cars parked on the emergency routes will be towed. Because snow removal is continuing, there will be no special pickups, brush or leaf pickups. Most of the City streets are passable but crews are continuing to clear neighborhood streets, cul-de-sacs and widening intersections.

In a press release, City officials reminded residents and commercial property owners that they are responsible for removing snow and ice from sidewalks surrounding their properties as soon as possible and that snow and ice is not to be placed on City streets.

The following are the snow emergency routes with restricted parking:

Annandale Road from Hillwood Avenue to Broad Street

Broad Street from Haycock Road to Seven Corners

Columbia Street from Maple Avenue to Tuckahoe Street
