McLean Highlander Dances at White House Reception

McLean High School
freshman Erin Howard was honored to perform for President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and the Prime Minister of Ireland Brian Cowen at a White House reception held this St. Patrick’s Day.IMG_0691.jpg

Howard is an accomplished Irish step dancer who will be competing in the World Championships of Irish Dance in April, as well as the North American Championships in July.

Bishop O’Connell to Host ‘Hope’ Walk

Bishop O’Connell High School
will be holding a 5K Walk for Hope this Saturday, April 4, to raise money for orphans living in Nairobi, Kenya. The walk takes place from 8 – 11 a.m. It begins and ends at the O’Connell Underwood parking lot. Prizes will be awarded to the participant who brings in the most pledge money.

J.E.B. Stuart H.S. PTSA Seeks Treasurer

The J.E.B. Stuart High School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is seeking a treasurer for the 2009-10 school year. The treasurer’s job takes no more than six hours a month, with the exception of tax form preparation. Knowledge of QuickBooks accounting software is helpful. The main tasks are reconciling the bank statement, making deposits and paying bills. Banking can be done on a Saturday. For information, e-mail Nancy Moy at nancyhmoy@yahoo.com.

Mason H.S. to Compete in Rotary Music Competition

George Mason High School
(G.M.H.S.) junior Shelley Gresko, a resident of Falls Church, performed a flute rendition of Chant de Linos by Jolivet and placed as a finalist in the Graham Green III Memorial Music Area Level Competition held last Saturday at Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church. Three finalists will compete at the Rotary District Conference this Saturday, April 4, for a $3,000 scholarship for music studies. Additional $1,000 and $500 scholarships will be awarded.

McLean H.S. Performs Well At Foreign Language Event

McLean High School’s
Roxanne Jaffray and Gabriel Planas, both won medals at the Northern Virginia Foreign Language Tournament, held last month. Jaffray and Planas won the silver and bronze medals, respectively, by reciting a passage from a 17th-century play, “Le Cid” by Pierre Corneille.

Marshall H.S. Newspaper Receives Award

George C. Marshall High School’s
student newspaper, Rank & File has earned a Silver Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The publication is one of 62 recipients of this very prestigious award.
