Champion Mustangs: Mason Girls Basketball Clinches State Title

Facing off against tough opposition from Floyd County High in a close game, 53-46, the George Mason High School girls basketball team emerged victorious last Saturday as the 2009 Virginia High School League Division 2 champions.

The Mason Mustangs challenged the Floyd County Buffaloes at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center last Saturday, March 14, after defeating the Lancaster High Lady Devils during the state semifinals the day before.

Junior Nicole Mitchell repeated her strong performance from the semifinal game, posting 15 points as Mason’s highest scorer, alongside freshman Bria Platenburg, with 14 points. Mitchell and Platenburg dominated the court during Mason’s heavy scoring second and third quarters.

The duo were joined by freshman Lauren Kane, senior Kim Kenny and junior Chantal Thomas. Kenny and Thomas topped up Mason’s lead with four free throws in the last 30 seconds of the fourth quarter.

“I’d like to thank a bunch of hardworking ladies,” said Mason Head Coach LaBryan Thomas. “24-6 is a good record for us, being a small school with a terrific defense.”
