Area Swimmers Move on to Regional Tournament
At their AAA National Division Swim meets held last week, J.E.B. Stuart High School’s boys swim team claimed first place.
Likewise, the swim and dive team from George C. Marshall left their Liberty District play heading to the Northern Regional tournament, with new school records from Cyrus Hashemi, who placed first in the 200 and 500-meter freestyle. Hashemi also placed fifth in the 400 free relay. Other placings were George Hirka (fifth place, 400 free relay; sixth, 200 free; seventh, 100 butterfly); Logan Hirka (fifth, 400 free relay); Leah Noordhuizen (fifth, 500 free); Andy Reilly (fifth, 400 free relay); Zach Stahl (seventh, dive); and Katherine Van Winkle (seventh, dive).
Falls Church Girls Dive Team Finishes Season
The Falls Church High School girls dive team finished their National District performance on Thursday, Feb. 5. The district team consisted of Maggie Cullather, Emily Sturges and Hannah Wilkerson. Their dives earned freshman Cullather with distinction as the 2009 National District dive champion. Junior Wilkerson placed in sixth and qualified for the Northern Regional Championship, which begins this coming week.
George C. Marshall Wrestlers Head to Regionals
After impressive finishes during their Liberty District championship, George C. Marshall wrestlers are advancing to the Northern Regionals. In first place were Mark Bergenholtz, Andrew Embree and Dan Montes; second place: Andy O’Meara; and coming in third were Quan Nguyen and Daniel Picado.
Nominations Sought for Mustangs’ Athletic Hall of Fame
The Nominating Committee for the George Mason High School (G.M.H.S.) Athletic Hall of Fame will hold an induction ceremony in the fall of 2009. The Committee requests that interested individuals nominate athletes, coaches, teams or other persons whom they believe qualify for consideration. Athletes and teams must have graduated or completed play no later than 2003 in order to be eligible for consideration. Mason Swim Team Nabs Single A Invitational
On Feb. 7, the George Mason High School swim team traveled to Bristol, Va. to challenge other Virginia schools at the single A Invitational. The boys and girls bested their competitions: with the boys taking a 132-point lead over second-place Clarke County High School, and the girls scraping by with a 30-point lead over Virginia High School. All together, the Mason swim team beat Virginia High by 194 points. Sam Butler, Kelley Frank and Karen Hamill made state qualifying times in the 50 free, and the girls made team records in the 100 free and 400 free relay. Rachel Hassan competed in diving for her first time and also qualified for States. The Mustangs’ next stop is the Regional meet this Friday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Audrey Moore Rec Center in Wakefield Park.
