F.C.H.S. Down Two at Dual Meets

The Falls Church High School swim and dive teams suffered double losses at their Jan. 23 meet against Washington-Lee High School.

The Falls Church Jaguars boys team fell 103-83, with the girls at 106.5-79.5.
Highlights from the boys meet were first-place finishes by the 400-yard FR team – Alek Anderson, Andrew Frank, Alex Howe and Scott Silvester – and individually by Anderson (100 back) and Howe (200, 500 FR). Second-place swimmers included the 200-yard medley relay team, David Blincoe, Paul Cossack, Frank and Eric Kuldell; the 200 FR A relay team, Blincoe, Nick Engquist, Silvester and Pieter van Wijngaarden); Anderson (200 IM); Blincoe (50, 100 FR) and Silvester (200 FR). Coming in third place were the 200 FR B relay team, Anderson, Michael Clingaman, Cossack, David Healy; the 400 FR B relay team, Engquist, Andy Fernandez and van Wijngaarden; Clingaman (100 BR) and Frank (50 FR, 100 FL).
On the girls team, first-place finishes were Maggie Cullather (dive), Clara Dombroski (100 BK) and the 400-yard FR A relay team – Cullather, Dombroski, Sarah Kane and Jenny Moore. Second place included the 200 medley relay, Kristina Clingaman, Dombroski, Moore and Emily Sturges; 200 FR relay, Clingaman, Cullather, Shelley Kendall and Sturges; Clingaman (500 FR); Cullather (100 FR); Dombroski (200 IM); Moore (200 FR) and Sturges (100 FL). Placing in third were the 400 FR B relay team, Kendall, Faithe Ofilas, Kara Sims and Chnar Sindi; Kendall (200 IM); Moore (100 BR); Sims (500 FR) and Sturges (50 FR).
The swim and dive team takes on J.E.B. Stuart at the Providence Rec Center at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, which also be the final dual meet for Jaguar seniors.

McLean Girls Basketball Go Even For the Week

With an overall record of 10-6 and a Liberty District record of 5-3, McLean High School’s girls Basketball team finished the week with a victory and defeat against respective opponents South Lakes and Langley. South Lakes, the Liberty District front runner, challenged McLean in a difficult game on Tuesday, Jan. 20, knocking the Highlanders out 48-41. After trailing the Langley Saxons during the first two quarters, the Highlanders charged back in the third, finishing the game 32-24. McLean’s top scorers for the night were Melissa Wilson (13 points), Caity Flint (six) and Andy Romness (four). Taylor Ancell, Caitlin Baker and Patricia Pascoe added three points each. On the Saxon side, sophomore Audrey Dotson led the scoreboard with six points.

Thomas Jefferson Swim & Dive Team Scores Wins

The Thomas Jefferson High School Swim and Dive boys and girls teams won their dual meets last Friday, Jan. 23, against Liberty District opponent George C. Marshall High School. The boys score was 219-91, girls 231-81.
On the boys’ side, individual event winners were: Alex Dona (50, 100 free), Peter Ballen (individual medley), Stephen Seliskar (500 free), Matt Callahan (backstroke) and Steven Howard (breaststroke). Callahan, Seliskar and Dona also swam on winning relays, as did Jack Borsi, Joey Bouchard, Andrew Hong and Jed Metge. Other top three finishers were William Bergan (breaststroke), Bouchard and Hong (50 free), Roman Enson (individual medley), Hong (backstroke), Mike Kim (butterfly), Seliskar and Callahan (100 free), Metge and Hugh Smith (200 free), Zach Sturm (butterfly, 500 free) and Marc Wechsler (500 free).
Individual event winners on the girls team included: Brenna Ferris (50, 100 freestyle), Katie Bennett (individual medley, 500 freestyle), Kelsey Rainey (200 free), Lauren Laffosse (butterfly), Brianna Kim (backstroke) and Aedan Collins (breaststroke). Winning relay teams were Bennett, Collins, Ferris, Laffosse and Kim, as well as Mary Kate Dilworth, Leah Gonzalez, Anna Lan, Jae Sim and Grace Wang. Other top three placements were: Shannon Smith and Anna Green (200 free), Claire Cundiff and Lan (individual medley), Sim (50, 100 free), Christina Wallin and Kristen Skowronski (diving), Kim (butterfly), Rebecca Fielding (100 free), Laffosse (500 free) and Joowon Choi and Catherine Dworak (breaststroke). Lorna Zhang of Falls Church also placed in the top three for backstroke.

Thomas Jefferson Gymnastics Grabs Gold

The Thomas Jefferson High School gymnastics team snagged the first place trophy with a combined score of 98.075 at the Washington-Lee Invitation held in Arlington Jan. 24. Thomas Jefferson gymnasts who placed were junior Amanda Gilbert of Fairfax (fourth place, Vault; fifth place, Floor and Beam; sixth place, All-Around), senior Mary Linnell of McLean (sixth place, Floor and Fault; seventh place, AA) and senior Kelly Watson of Alexandria (first place, Floor; third place, Vault, Beam and AA; fourth place, Bars). Ariel Coronel and Hailey Johnson also competed for Thomas Jefferson.

J.E.B. Stuart Basketball Racks Up Wins

J.E.B. Stuart High School’s Varsity basketball teams finished the week with wins, one loss and a cancellation of their Tuesday, Jan. 27 showdowns against Falls Church High School due to inclement weather. The loss came at the girls game against Washington-Lee High School on Jan. 21, losing 36-30. The boys team won 61-30 against Washington-Lee. Both teams performed well with close victories against Wakefield High School; the boys team’s final score was 76-66, the girls, 42-31.
