Local Girls ‘Strike’ Gold at Battlefield Classic Tourney

The Reston Strikers U-13 WAGS travel soccer team, which include girls from Falls Church and the immediate surrounding area, took the Gold division championship title at the prestigious Battlefield Classic 2008 Soccer Tournament over Columbus Day weekend. SPORTS-soccergirls.jpg

The team went 4-0, allowing only one goal over the course of the tournament. They defeated a Vienna team 1-0 in the championship game. Over the past three years that the Strikers have been together on a team, they have played in the championship game of 50 percent of the tournaments they have entered.

Falls Church H.S. XC Boys Qualify for Regionals

For the first time in nearly seven years, the Falls Church High School Varsity Boys Cross Country team qualified for the AAA Northern Region Championship. The team placed third at Burke Lake last Thursday. The Jaguars went undefeated in their regular season meets.

Junior Alex Howe led the Jaguars, placing sixth in the district with a personal best of 16.44. He was followed by junior Jesus Reyes, seniors Terence Lebegern and Peter Taylor, sophomore Abdi Nur, junior David Blincoe, and senior Nick Engquist. The Jaguars will compete at the Northern Region Championships at Burke Lake Park today.

Thomas Jefferson Teams Defend District XC Titles

The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Boys and Girls Varsity Cross Country squads ran superb races to defend their district titles at Burke Lake on Oct. 22. All seven girls and seven boys earned All-District honors by placing in the top 15 times, a first for Thomas Jefferson cross country.

The boys’ predominantly senior team was led to victory by district champion Alex Witko of Springfield, who ran the 2.98-mile course in 15:58. Witko was followed by Timmy Galvin of Burke, Logan Gates of Vienna, Colin Maloney of Fairfax and Jimmy Wu of Great Falls in third through sixth places, respectively. Max Dreo from Vienna and Joey Jachowski from Alexandria placed ninth and 10th.

SPORTS-xc-girls-liberty-dis.jpgThe race was extremely close, as there was only a seven-second spread between the first and ninth runner’s times. The Thomas Jefferson boys’ score was an incredible 19 points. The closest competitor was W.T. Woodson High School, with a score of 52.

The girl’s district champion was Thomas Jefferson sophomore Stephanie Marzen, hailing from McLean, with an outstanding time of 18:01. Marzen was followed by freshman Sarah Stites of Reston in third place, sophomore Lisa Junta of Springfield and freshman Katherine Sheridan of Vienna in fifth and sixth, senior Neesha Schnepf and freshman Rekha Schnepf, both of McLean, in places 10 and 11. Freshman Sarah Nielsen from Reston placed 14th, respectively. The girls’ team earned a score of only 25 points with their closest competitor also being Woodson who earned 64 points.

Marzen, Stites and Sheridan have all been added to Thomas Jefferson’s Burke Lake All-Time Performers List. Lisa Junta earned that honor last year in her 2007 regional race. The boys’ teams of Jefferson, W.T. Woodson, South Lakes and Stone Bridge and the girls’ teams of Jefferson, Woodson, Langley, and Stone Bridge High Schools advance to the regional competition today at Burke Lake.

Stuart vs. F.C. to Hold Bell Game on Stuart Territory

The annual Bell Game will be held on Halloween, Friday, Oct. 31, at J.E.B. Stuart High School. The last game of the season between Stuart and Falls Church High School is a traditional rivalry dating back to the 1960s.

The schools play to win the historic J.E.B. Stuart Bell, which is said to come from the U.S.S. J.E.B. Stuart. Tickets are $5. For more information, call Stuart H.S. at 703-824-3900.
