F.C. Apartment Fire Proves Fatal

An apartment fire at 6200 Wilson Boulevard early last Saturday morning proved fatal when Mark Christopher Williams, 39, of that address, died late Sunday night at the Washington Burn Center. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to the fire at the 12-story Cavalier Club Apartments at 7:50 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire in apartment 211 upon arrival. Soon, over 90 emergency personnel were deployed to the scene to fight the fire and safely evacuate several hundred residents from the 220-unit building. There was also a small explosion confined to a room in the apartment. The fire was brought under control in 15 minutes. According to fire investigators, the fire was intentionally set and Fairfax County Police were called to investigate a suicide threat. While Williams was transported by medivac to the Washington Burn Center, two other adults and one police officer were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and two other police officers were treated at the scene.
