Arts Camp Presents ‘Born to be Wild’

Creative Cauldron, Inc., a non-profit performing and visual arts organization, will host a public performance titled “Born to be Wild” through its Arts Adventure Camp on Friday, July 27 at 11 a.m. in the Newton Edwards Amphitheater at Mason District Park (6621 Columbia Pike, Annandale). The nature-based theme has been produced under the direction of Oran Sandel, Matt Conner and Lauren Williams. The summer day camp uses the arts to explore and celebrate nature and the environment.

Arts Adventure for Digital Kids is a two-week camp being offered August 20 – 31 for rising third through eighth grade students that will focus on producing movies using digital photography and video. Campers will develop, script and storyboard a concept for a short movie and will learn on- and behind-the-camera techniques. The camp will take place 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and costs $480. It’s held in the mornings at the amphitheater at Mason District Park and in the afternoons at 111 Park Ave., Falls Church. Contact info@creativecauldron.org for more information.

 

Hand Me My Rapier

The Virginia Academy of Fencing (5401-B Port Royal Road #3, Springfield, Va.) is hosting a week-long Olympic sport fencing camp for ages nine and up. Remaining sessions that run 9 a.m. – Noon are July 30 – August 3, August 13 – 17 and August 27 – 31. 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. sessions are July 23 – 27, August 6 – 10 and August 20 – 24.  The camp costs $170 for Falls Church residents and $180 for non-residents. An equipment fee of $29 is payable to Virginia Academy of Fencing on the first day of camp. Call 703-321-4922 to register.

 

Wally Martin 3-Meter Dive Meet

The Northern Virginia Swim League-Diving held its 40th annual Wally Martin 3-Meter Dive Meet on July 15 at Tuckahoe in McLean. The only 3-meter competition of the season, over 100 divers ages nine to 18 competed in the championship. 31 of the 43 league’s pools were represented.

Anise Muir of Hayfield Farm won the Freshman Girls level with a score of 82.15. Lee-Graham diver Elena Bavolack landed sixth place with a 61.65 score, while Rachel Short of Tuckahoe took seventh place with 51.25. In the Freshman Boys division, Pinecrest’s Bennett Fagan won with a score of 96.35. Sean Paulson of Sleepy Hollow B&R came in sixth, scoring 65.10. The winner of the Junior Girls level Alison Stickel (Vienna Woods) scored 124.50. In seventh was Tahira Talout (Tuckahoe, 61.95), ninth was Caroline Metzmaier (Lee-Graham, 55.85) and 10th was Kate Ray (Tuckahoe, 52.85). In Junior Boys, Joseph LeBerre won with a 106.90 score. The Intermediate Girls winner was Kelli Stockton of Lakeview with a score of 180.60, with Rachel Hassan (Lee-Graham) taking 10th. Cory Bowersox’s score of 223.10 brought him in first place in the Intermediate Boys division. In Senior Girls, Leslie Rae (Mansion House) won with a 237.70 score, while Jessica Everett (Tuckahoe, 159.35) and Jackie Parker (Lee-Graham, 155.70) took six and seventh places respectively. Sean McKinney won the Senior Boys level, scoring 264.95.

 

Oakton Otters Makes Top Spots

The Oakton Otters competed against Hamlet in Division 6 Diving on July 10, yielding five winners. Lauren Branton won first place in the Freshman Girls division. Haley Worsham, Victoria Sommese, A.J. Colbert and Lauren Johnson claimed the top four spots in the Junior Girls level. In the Junior Boys, Stephen Kralick took first. Alyssa Worsham was the winner in the Intermediate Girls level. The undefeated Emily Rakoski won first place at the Senior Girls level.

The Oakton Otters will have their next meet at Kent Gardens on July 17.

 

Cracker Jack Meet this Sunday

The annual Cracker Jack Meet will take place Sunday, July 22 at 9 p.m. at the Cardinal Hill Pool in Vienna. It is the world’s largest one-day diving competition, with over 350 divers competing last year.
