Last Wednesday the George Mason High School varsity track squad completed a dual meet sweep of host Madison County, as the girls won 94-26, while the boys followed suit, winning 85-46.
Leading the ladies in points was triple winner Meredyth Duncan who won the triple, long and high jumps. Sophomore Melissa Benn prevailed in both the shot put and discus, while juniors Karina Robarge (100m and 300m hurdles) and Naté Smartt (100m and 400m) were also double winners.
Other first place finishes for Mason included senior Emma Goetz in the 3200, junior Lydia Fairfax in the 1600, freshman Chantel Bailey in the 200, and the 4×100 relay team of Duncan, freshman Autumn Brennan, junior Minh Le and sophomore Kolyanne Isenbarger.
“To win Districts, a team has to take multiple spots in many events,” Mustang coach Julie Bravin said following the meet. “We look good in that respect, but our district teams are extremely competitive, so it will be a fight for first.”
Without star Susanna Sullivan, who hasn’t participated in the past three meets, the Mustangs have been forced to work extra hard to compensate. Their dedication is paying off, as the girls’ team is undefeated at the moment. However, they still have to face district powerhouse Manassas Park and Strasburg.
The undermanned boys’ squad, minus all-state runner Josh Jenkins, still managed to defeat the Mountaineers, aided by point leaders Derek Devore, Yusof Becker and Austin Lucas.
Devore, a senior, placed first in the 300 hurdles, as well as second in the 110 hurdles. Junior Becker took his cues from Devore, placing first in the 110 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles, while fellow classman Lucas placed first in the shot put and second in discus.
Also earning victories for the Mustangs were senior Ed Hickey in the discus and sophomore Jon McHugh in the 800.
“The boys have been working hard, and it definitely shows,” Bravin said. “Their performances at meets are getting better with each week. It will be exciting to see how it all comes together at Districts.”
Mason had their next-to-last District meet this Wednesday against Manassas Park at home, but results were not available at press time. They will take on the Strasburg Rams at home as well on May 16, which will be followed by the district meet five days later.
