Arbor Day at GMHS
George Mason High School celebrated Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony and history session. A tree was planted in honor of Dave Eckert, noted community activist and organizer, who moved to Oregon last year. Reilly O’Hara hosted this year’s activities, telling the history of Arbor Day in F.C. and GMHS students formed a cheering section in honor of “the Lorax”, the famed Dr. Seuss character who “speaks for the trees.” Two rain gardens, one planted by last year’s 8th graders, were also dedicated.
Local Student is Presidential Scholarship Semifinalist
Brian Glover, son of Mike and Kathleen Glover, a graduating senior at George Mason High School has been named one of approximately 550 semifinalists in the 2007 Presidential Scholarship Program. Semifinalists are selected based on superior academic achievement, leadership qualities, personal character and involvement in community and school activities. Final selection of the scholars will be made by the Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group appointed by the President. One young man and one young woman from each state will receive the scholarship and are invited to D.C. to receive the award at a late-June ceremony held in their honor.
Local Teaches Latin Award Winner
Falls Church City resident Paul Perrot, a Latin teacher at Park View High School in Sterling, helped Kevin Jefferson of Sterling to a first place finish at one of the largest Latin translation competitions in North America. Kevin won the tournament sponsored by the Classical Association of the Middle West and South. Mr. Perrot has also won the Ed Phinney Commemorative Scholarship from the American Classical League which will enable him to teach two conversational Latin programs this summer and a summer Latin institute.
I’m Gonna Live Forever!
Falls Church High School presents “Fame!” the beloved Broadway musical that tells the story of New York’s High School for the Performing Arts. The students promise to have audience members singing and dancing in the aisles. St. James Celebrates Centennial
On April 30 the Arlington Diocese will celebrate 100 years of Catholic education and tradition at St. James Catholic School with a tree dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. A Paperbark Maple tree will be dedicated and blessed and the winner of the student poetry contest will present his or her poem at the event. Marshall H.S. Fore!(th) Annual Golf Tournament
Plan ahead for the Marshall Football Program’s Fourth Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser. The tournament will be held on Sunday, May 20, starting at 1 p.m. at Penderbrook Golf Club (3700 Golf Trail Ln., Fairfax). The previous three years have sold out, so early signup is encouraged. Registration is $150 for individuals and $500 for a foursome. The fee includes a cart, 18 holes and dinner immediately following. A raffle, silent auction and putting contest will also be held, along with several other giveaways and goodie bags. Timber Lane vs. Westlawn Staff Basketball Game
Come see Timber Lane’s teachers play hoops against the teachers of Westlawn Elementary School at the Falls Church HS gym on April 27 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $2.00 in advance and $3.00 at the door.
