The George Mason High School girls varsity lacrosse team ran its season record to a sterling 7-0 before the Mustangs tasted their first defeat this past Tuesday against AAA school T.C. Williams, 11-4.
The Titans controlled the ball early and staked themselves to a 4-2 lead at the half. Mason rallied immediately following the intermission, scoring off of the opening draw to pull within a goal at 4-3. However, T.C. Williams regained its tight-fisted control of the ball thereafter, and ran away to a seven-goal victory.
Emily Perry recorded 13 saves in goal for the Mustangs, while Catherine Duarte paced the attack with a pair of goals. Allie Atkeson and Sally Blakemore each added individual scores for Mason.
The loss to T.C. Williams snapped a seven-game winning streak for Mason to start the season. The most recent of those victories came April 11 and 12 with an 8-2 triumph over Brentsville and a 6-4 win against Potomac Falls respectively.
Blakemore continued to shine for Mason, scoring a total of nine goals between the two games, including a five-goal performance against Brentsville.
During Thursday’s Dulles District match up against Potomac Falls, Courtney Ready put the Mustangs on the board with the first goal of the game. She then assisted on Mason’s second goal, passing out of a double team to Duarte, who fired a low shot past the Potomac Falls keeper. From there Blakemore shouldered the scoring load, notching four consecutive goals to end the game.
Emily Perry made nine saves in goal.
With their record at 7-1 and still undefeated in the Dulles District, Mason took the field Wednesday night for a game against district opponent Heritage. The Mustangs next square off against Briar Woods Thursday, April 19 for the team’s third game in three days.
