After a day slaving away under florescent light bulbs at work, why not find a place where the only lights are dim, round, and covered in sparkles?
Add to that a swank restored 1960’s-era bar, purple pool tables, and a cheap yet exciting menu, and you arrive at Continental Modern Pool Lounge in Arlington.
You’ll have trouble pinning down this spot with any word but “retro.” Inspired by Miami and Vegas nightclubs of the 60’s and 70’s, Continental has been described as “the most imaginatively designed room in America” for it’s eclectic mix of bright colors, space-age design, and a tiki bar — complete with giant statues set against lime green walls.
The expansive menu is made up of American favorites — each with a twist. Instead of your average turkey sandwich, try the Flying Melba. Smoked turkey is loaded on a pressed hoagie with sweet raspberry Melba, a type of jam. This dish is rich, but a pleasant surprise for the taste buds. Prices run from $4.95 for vegetarian fare and appetizers up to $9.95 for seafood and specials.
With such a large menu, it may be difficult to decide on one sandwich or salad, but the going advice is be adventurous. A recommended favorite of the wait staff is the buffalo chicken salad, made with their own tangy wing sauce. If you’re feeling really retro, opt to save room for a classic Coke float to finish off your meal.
Of course, you would expect a bar as imaginative looking as this to measure up in the uniqueness of its drink menu as well. Anticipate brightly colored martinis and cocktails, as well as your indispensable selection of domestic and imported beers. Surprise a friend with the Gummi Bear cocktail for $8.95 — an amusing drink that leaves behind a sweet treat once she’s finished.
This lounge is also famous for its nightly specials, which include half-price burgers on Wednesdays and happy hour half-price appetizers from 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays host free pool for ladies; normally a four-person game will run you about $18-$20. For a cheaper diversion, check out darts for $1.
Also to remember, after 5 p.m., you’ll need to show your I.D. Clientele includes students from Georgetown as well as a hefty dose of young professionals who want to wind down with a drink and catch a game on one of the flat-screens with friends. Late nights are filled with music as eclectic as the décor.
Not a place to go on a first date, but if you’re looking for a fun and relaxed place to hang out after work, skip the usual pub fare and enter the swinging doors at Continental.
