Meridian Sports Recap: 9/29 – 10/5

Meridian fall sports are beginning to wind down, and with playoffs for some teams fast approaching, Meridian teams are playing in some of the most important games of their seasons. The clubs combined for a record of six wins and just three losses.

Football unfortunately continued their pattern of winning one game and losing one game, losing to James Wood HS in a 55-10 blowout. Their record now sits at 3-3, and with very few positives to take from this game, the Mustangs will look ahead towards their homecoming game against Thomas Jefferson HS.

Field hockey has kept their perfect season alive and extended their undefeated record to 14-0, with wins this week over Liberty HS, Hayfield HS, and Lightridge HS. The latter two are very strong programs that the Mustangs battled with all game, but eventually were able to outlast both teams and secure victories, 2-0 over Hayfield and 1-0 over Lightridge. The Mustangs’ impregnable defense proved key in both victories, and has been the staple unit during this terrific run of form. Incredibly, Meridian’s defense and goaltender have only allowed four goals throughout the entirety of the season, one against Fauquier HS, and three against McLean HS. With just a few games to go in the season, the Mustangs’ two biggest games draw near. Their matchups against Kettle Run and Fauquier could and likely will decide who leads the district standing by the end of the season.

Girls volleyball went 2-1 this week, losing one game to Skyline HS and sweeping Warren County HS and Kettle Run 3-0. Their record improves to 11-3-1, one of the strongest in the district. As the season winds down, the Mustangs will undoubtedly begin to prepare for the playoffs, and hope to make a deep postseason run.

Boys volleyball went 1-1 this week, beating out Fairfax Home School 3-2, before dropping a game to Justice HS 1-3. After their difficult start to the season, the Mustangs have won four of their last six games, boosting their record to a respectable 5-7 over the past couple weeks. While this record is a drastic improvement over their 1-5 start to the campaign, the squad only has five games left in the season to move further up the standings.
